Lionel Messi on the way back to Barcelona after injury

Lionel Messi is on his way back to Barcelona after suffering an injury against Honduras on Friday night, while playing for Argentina.

The Barcelona star must appear in court in a tax evasion case, but he has a new problem after damaging his back in the friendly clash.

“We did a scan on him at the stadium and then took him to do an ultrasound and an MRI. Thankfully we didn’t find any bone damage or fractures but there is a large contusion," explained team doctor Daniel Martinez.

Messi collided with Johnny Leveron and fell into Oliver Morazan's knee, which caused the damage, forced off after 64 minutes of the game.

Barcelona's medical team noted he had "a trauma in the left side of his lumbar zone and rib cage."

Gonzalo Higuain's strike against Honduras handed Argentina a 1-0 win in their warm-up clash ahead of the Copa America Centenario.

Messi left San Juan for Barcelona to appear in the court case which will begin on Tuesday, at the Superior Justice Court of Catalunya, with the player poised to appear on Thursday.

The court have also reserved Friday June 3 if the process needs to be extended, after Messi and his father speak.

The prosecutor wants his father Jorge to be given 18 months in prison for evading 4.1million euros in tax, but has said that Messi, who was originally implicated as well, did not know about the fraud.
