Lionel Messi returns to a stadium where he has bittersweet memories

Lionel Messi will lead Barcelona's attack once again on Saturday, in a stadium in which he has a lot of intense memories, both positive and negative. In the Benito Villamarin, he suffered an injury, one of many he sustained in the year Tata Martino was in charge of Barcelona. Months before, the star struck there to become the player who has scored the most goals in a calendar year, ahead of the 'Torpedo' Gerd Muller.

In 2012-13 Leo beat the German's historic record of 85 goals in a calendar year set in 1972, when he scored a double against Betis in a 1-2 win. With 2012 yet to end, Messi amplified his total with doubles against Atletico and Cordoba, and one against Valladolid, ending up with 91 goals.

11 months later, he arrived at the game carrrying knocks, having suffered two muscular injuries in the previous month. In Seville, the third arrived. Messi was taken off and missed the next two months, in the worst season of his career. Barcelona were only able to win the Spanish Supercup this season.
