Lionel Messi looking to rob a record from Cristiano Ronaldo tonight

A Champions League game is never worthless and what better way to show that than Lionel Messi starting

FC Barcelona did their homework at Celtic Park. The team won the game and secured top spot in their Champions League group, making it through to the last 16. That means the game against Borussia Monchengladbach tonight is a dead rubber. But a Champions League game is never worthless and what better way to show that than Lionel Messi being picked.

Luis Enrique confirmed in his press conference that the Argentine would start the game. The coach rarely mentions team news like that, but it could be that he wants to bring more fans to the Camp Nou, knowing Messi will be in action.

Messi is also filled with enthusiasm and motivation. He has a nice challenge in front of him. He has scored 9 goals so far in Europe and is two short of the 11 Cristiano Ronaldo netted in the group stage in 2015-16, a record.

The Argentine will also be out to add to his overall goals tally, with Ronaldo's 17 currently the largest haul in the competition's history.

Curiously Messi has been extremely efficient, with 10 shots resulting in nine goals. Craig Gordon is the only stopper who has the privilege of being able to say he has saved a shot from Messi in this tournament. However, he still shipped three to the Argentine in Barcelona's 7-0 win at Camp Nou.

Messi missed the away game against Gladbach through injury and so will be looking to make up for that now...
