Madrid and Barcelona players had the most votes, with 24 and 16 per cent respectively

Three Barcelona players appear in UEFA's XI of the year: Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique. The three Barcelona stars join four Real Madrid players, with Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric getting the nod. 

UEFA took in more than seven million votes on their web page, with Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus chosen in goal, with his team-mate Bonucci joining Pique, Ramos and Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng in defence. Iniesta, Kroos and Modric are the midfielders, while Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann joins Messi and Ronaldo up front. 

With 48 per cent of the vote from Europe and 25 per cent in Asia, the most voted for player was Ramos, with 488,908 votes. Cristiano (450,220) and Messi (418,449) came next.
