Leo Messi begins to run as he targets full fitness for Man City

The Argentine has entered the next phase of his recovery and hopes to return after the international break

Lionel Messi has entered the second phase of his recovery from a groin injury. 

On Monday, the Argentine forward was at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, despite the rest of the squad being given the day off after Sunday’s defeat in Vigo. Messi has his mind set on the Champions League game against Manchester City on Oct. 19. 

The Blaugrana player, who until now had been restricted to work with physiotherapist, Roger Girones, was able to run continuously on the pitch on Monday morning, working with fitness coach Edu Pons. 

A meeting also took place between club medics, physiotherapists and fitness coaches to evaluate how Messi is recovering from the injury he picked up on Sept. 21 against Atletico Madrid. 

The plan is for the second phase of the recovery to begin with half an hour of continuous running, completed with exercises under the supervision of one of the physiotherapists. 

In principle, the original diagnosis was for three weeks on the sidelines. However, there will be no risks taken and no corners cut when it comes to returning to action. 

However, the step forward in Messi’s recovery on Monday is the best possible news, especially arriving after the 4-3 loss to Celta Vigo at Balaidos this past weekend.
