Karim Benzema will spend the night in police custody

Karim Benzema will spend the night in police custody in Versailles, as he is investigated as an alleged part of the plot to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena over a sex-tape.

The player's name came up in conversation relating to the matter, said a police source. His lawyer, Sylvain Cormier said that Benzema "has nothing to do with this matter".

Former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has also been caught up in the case — he was taken in for questioning last month.

However, Cisse was eventually released by the police and later protested his innocence on television in France.
