The club say they do not want to be used and are not manipulable

The president spoke about Barcelona's role in the current political situation

FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu spoke about the political situation of Catalonia during the club's annual general meeting. He spoke at length to the gathered socios.

Bartomeu said: "Barcelona condone the acts that go against democracy and the right to decide, principles which go against the club’s historic values. On Oct. 1, in exceptional circumstances, we decided to play behind closed doors despite the demands of the socios to cancel the game.

"Without doubt it was one of the toughest decisions I have had to take. After not being able to cancel the game, I had to make a personal decision. Those images [of the empty stadium] were seen around the world. I am aware not everyone agreed with the decision and there were subsequently two resignations from the board. Our call is for ‘dialogue, respect and sport.’

"No one can doubt Barca’s commitment to the Catalan community. We defend the principles of democracy, the right to decide and freedom of expression, always with respect. That said, more than ever we call for dialogue and respect. In our case, we also call for respect to improve the coexistence between people. We know Barça are More than a Club and Camp Nou is a place for expression.

"Precisely for that reason, we ask for respect for our institution and freedom of thought among our socios. We cannot be a political instrument, no one can use or manipulate our badge or our flag, we will not let them be used. You can be sure that this board will always act in the club’s defence.

"We will never put the club nor its presence in any competition at risk. That’s why, to all the socios, I say that we want to continue playing in La Liga and, as of today, our participation [in La Liga] is guaranteed. It’s mutually beneficial for La Liga and Barcelona for that link to continue.

"We know that Barca is More than a Club and must be a space for harmony and respect. There must be respect for everyone, minorities and majorities, to think what they things, all institutions and people. For that reasons, it’s unacceptable that in this century there are people in prison for their political ideas (ANC president Jordi Sánchez and Omnium president Jordi Cuixart)."
