The defender looked ahead to this weekend's Champions League final

Barcelona defender Jordi Alba is a “strange” one because even though he gets on “perfectly with them all” he says he “still want them to lose all of their games” ahead of this weekend’s Champions League final.

Alba hopes he won’t have to congratulate Madrid (they face Liverpool in Kiev on Saturday) for a third consecutive Champions League win, just like he did last year when they beat Juventus. “I congratulated them but I would have liked to not have to.”

With respect to the guard of honour Madrid refused to give Barça, the left-back didn’t kick up a fuss: “It’s more to do with the media than the teams, but they will have their reasons for not doing it. We’re still champions regardless.”

MESSI CONNECTION

Alba also spoke about his relationship with Messi, although he said that he won’t think about it too much if he has to face his club teammate at the World Cup.

He explained: “When I have to defend, I don’t have friends, because I don’t want even my dad to beat me.”

For Alba, “Leo is the best in the world and as he never messes up, I always try to give him the ball. The truth is that we know each other well and we look for each other, even though it’s also true that defences now expect that connection.”

ADIOS ANDRES

On the departure of Andres Iniesta, Alba claimed he didn’t know where the midfielder was heading. “I don’t think he’s even sure himself, although I’m sure wherever he goes he will be fine,” he said. “He’s one of the best in history and it’s a shame he has to leave.”

The defender also looked back on the tough Champions League loss to Roma: “We had a good advantage and everything set for the second leg, but we had a bad day. No one can explain that 3-0 loss but it happened. If you’re not switched on, that’s what happens.”
