Javier Mascherano will not serve one year prison sentence

Javier Mascherano will not serve his year in prison and instead pay a fine of 280,000 euros after being convicted of tax fraud on January 21. That is according to SER Catalunya, after the player had proposed a fine of 21,000 euros through his lawyer.

Mascherano was sentenced to paying an initial fine of 815,000 euros, as well as returning the 1.5m euros he had defrauded the tax office by, and paying for the cost of the trial, along with his year in prison.

Sources close to Mascherano hoped that the suspension of his sentence will only last five months - during this period if he commits a crime he would have to serve the year in prison.
