Javier Mascherano says he would not want to swap places with Lionel Messi

In an intimate interview with Espacio Reservado Javier Mascherano has said that he "would not change places with Lionel Messi." The interview will air on Canal+ Liga on May 29 and 10pm CET.

The Argentine, who has had a great season with FC Barcelona, justified his words, saying "I can't imagine living his life. You have to be really special to carry that sort of responsibility and to demonstrate every three days, in every match, that you are the best in the world."

Mascherano also spoke about a season which could still end with the Copa del Rey and the Champions League: "One of the great successes has been adapting to they style of play needed in each match."

He also pointed out that there is no hiding place for players who cannot fit in with Barça's philosophy. "Anyone who comes from outside has to adapt to the club's philosophy and if he doesn't, he has to leave."

One player not leaving in that way is Xavi, who waved goodbye to Camp Nou on Saturday, although the Copa del Rey final is due to be held there this weekend. "It's going to be strange to start the season without him," Mascherano continued.

"Xavi's importance is there for all to see on the pitch, but in the dressing he has been a great counsellor, too, who knows the good and the bad of this club."

On a sporting level, Mascherano was asked if Barcelona are favourites going into the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals. "It's easy to say that, but for me Juventus are the biggest team in Italy. In recent years they have been preparing for this moment. It will be a really tough game and the differences will be in the small details."

He also expects things to be difficult against Athletic Club on Saturday. "They are a team who have always done very well in cups and they will make things complicated in the final."
