Ivan Rakitic: "Three big players don't make a team"

Ivan Rakitic, the new central midfielder for Barcelona, was the player put forward for a press conference during the second day of training at St George's Park.

Rakitic was blunt when it was suggested the rest of the team behind Leo Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez was just a large 'block'.

“They’re three of the best players in the world but three players don’t make a team. We all have to play an important part for the team," he said.

The Croatian midfielder said about Barcelona, more generally: "It feels very good for now. I'm seeing it is all a bit faster and has more intensity. The work is very hard."

Rakitic added: "I'm not surprised at the quality of the players here because I have already played against them, but I'm just enjoying each day."

He has not spoken to Luis Enrique yet to know what the coach wants from him this season.

"No, we have not gone into details, just general ideas," he said. "But I hope we talk more deeply."

Versatile

The Croatian said: "I feel very comfortable in several positions, from pivot to playmaker, and I'll play where it is considered best."

As for the differences between Sevilla and Barcelona, he said: "The style of football isn’t too dissimilar to Sevilla’s but in training, you have to give 100 per cent or you’ll be left behind.

"Barcelona’s ideas on the game are similar to Unai Emery’s at Sevilla, but here it is far more intense and demanding. I am still learning and I have got a way to go still.

"I tried to give my best in every session – I demand a lot from myself. We have to give everything we’ve got out on the pitch when the season starts."

Rakitic was also pleased that Xavi Hernandez will continue for the 2014-15 season.

As a team mate, it is great that he is staying. That fact that he is here is fantastic for me. He is heavily involved in every training session so it’s great news that he's staying.”
