González González surprise choice to referee Barça's trip to Real Sociedad

The official has had bad experiences in the past when taking charge of Barcelona fixtures

The LFP have confirmed the referees for this week's Copa del Rey quarterfinal first leg games. And the choise for Real Sociedad's game against Barcelona may put more than a few people on alert. The chosen official is José Luis González González, who doesn't have fond memories of Barça matches in the past.

Exactly one year ago González González took charge of the Catalan derby between Espanyol and Barça at Cornella-El Prat. The Blaugrana complained that he had allowed the home side to get away with playing dirty. The game ended goalless and it provoked a fiery run of fixtures between the two local rivals.

González González went into that Barcelona derby after refereeing an intense game between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad when he awarded two controversial penalties.

And two weeks later, when González González was again chosen for a Barcelona game, this time the Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Athletic Club, Luis Enrique showed his surprise, hardly able to hide his disgust at the decision. Even though they won the game and then the tie, Barça were not satisifed with the official's performance at San Mames.

Now, he will once again referee Barça in an imporant cup game one year later. Here is the LFP's tweet revealing this week's referees:
