Former Barcelona goalkeeper Andre Onana steps into Jasper Cillessen's shoes

Jasper Cillessen's transfer to the Camp Nou has enabled former Barcelona youth team player Andre Onana to take the reins in the Ajax goal.

At 20-years-old, Onana played his second game for the Dutch side on Sunday as he kept a clean sheet in his team's 3-0 win over Go Ahead Eagles.

Onana showed a remarkable performance level and also saved a penalty from Leon de Kogel after 21 minutes.

According to Twitter account Opta John, it was the first time a goalkeeper had saved a penalty for Ajax since Kenneth Vermeer's stop against RKC Waalwijk in February 2013.

Onana's efficiency in this respect contrasts to that of Cillessen. According to YannickFooty, the new Barça signing hasn't been able to save any of the 26 penalties that he has been faced with in his professional career.

In the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup during the Netherlands game against Costa Rica, former Oranje coach Louis van Gaal substituted the 27-year-old for Tim Krul just before the end of extra time for the upcoming penalty shootout - a decision that proved successful as the Netherlands went on to beat Costa Rica.

At the age of 18, Onana left the Blaugrana in January 2015 when the Catalan club decided not to offer him a contract renewal before joining Ajax.

Last season, former coach Frank de Boer promoted Onana to the first team and that progression has continued after his first start of the 2016/17 season on Sunday.
