FIFA give green light to stop Clasico if Lionel Messi breaks Telmo Zarra goal record

FIFA have given the green light for the Clasico to be stopped mid-game if Lionel Messi scores twice and becomes the top scorer in La Liga history.

According to a spokesman for the world football body, it is an "internal matter" for the Spanish football federation to decide on an appropriate tribute.

Speaking to DPA, the FIFA spokesman said: "The issue depends on the federation of the country. There is nothing specific in the rules about this."

A few days ago the president of the LFP, Javier Tebas, left the door open to the idea of the game stopping should Messi break the record.

For their part, the RFEF said that nothing was planned for the game.

"We have not received any request from Barcelona, we know of the existence of this proposal by the newspapers, but we are not considering doing anything."
