Europe's giants spend over 1 BILLION euros to dethrone Barcelona

Over a billion euros has been spent as Europe's giants look to dethrone Barcelona, who won the treble in Berlin, becoming the only side in history to do it twice.

And in the transfer market we have seen how the other teams are trying to respond.

Barcelona have won four of the last 10 Champions Leagues and the rest of the challengers have thrown everything - including the kitchen sink - at the market as they attempt to peg the Catalans back.

The epicentre of the spending is the Premier League. It's the most powerful league in the world when it comes to economics, and Man City are Europe's biggest spenders.

The Premier League leaders, who are trying to improve on poor showings in Europe, are hoping this year they can make the jump.

They have spent more than €200m. Aitor ‘Txiki’ Begiristain, formerly of Barcelona, has bet big on young players, with Kevin de Bruyne signing for €75m, Sterling for €62.5m, Otamendi for €44.6m.

Their neighbours, Man United, haven't been quiet either. Van Gaal's side just splashed up to €80m on Anthony Martial from Monaco (€30m in variables).

United also signed Memphis, Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Meanwhile, reigning champions Chelsea have picked up Pedro for €27m from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, back home, Atletico Madrid, who won La Liga in 2014, are aiming to fight back and have spent a lot this summer - €139.5m.

They have brought in the likes of Jackson Martinez, Luciano Vietto and many others.

Valencia have also splashed the cash, turning Rodrigo and Negredo into permanent players, bringing in Abdennour, Mat Ryan and Santi Mina.

Juventus too, have gone for Dybala and Mandzukic, as well as Cuadrado among others. Bayern opted for Arturo Vidal and Douglas Costa (€67m total) as they look to get some Champions League success.

Barcelona have spent €34m on Arda Turan and €17m on Aleix Vidal.

Their Champions League rivals have also splashed out. Bayer Leverkusen went big for Chicharito (€12m), Roma moved for Edin Dzeko and Mo Salah from Chelsea.

However, BATE Borisov, Barcelona's other opponent in the group stage, haven't spent a penny.
