Enrique still needs Marquinhos and Cuadrado

Barcelona have one week to analyse their squad before deciding what is missing to create a side capable of challenging for La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

The Blaugrana have clearly reinforced well so far, but it also seems obvious that the defence is the area that still needs improvement, given what happened last season.

INJURY WORRIES

It does not take much effort to remember the trouble Tata Martino had with injuries. He never had four centre-backs last season at full fitness.

Carles Puyol only played in 12 of the 59 official games of the club.

It meant that Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano were put together but they were not an outstanding partnership.

The Catalan played 39 games, while the Argentine took part in 36. Youngster Marc Bartra played 30.

The most significant injury suffered was to Pique, during Barcelona v Atletico in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

He suffered a hip injury which kept him out of action not only in this tie, but also in the Copa del Rey final and virtually the rest of the league season.

THE FLANKS

Dani Alves suffered minor setbacks, including tendinitis in his ankle in September, and a rupure in the soleus muscle in his right leg in November, but still managed to play 42 games.

By contrast, the left-flank was far more trouble.

Jordi Alba sufferred two fibrillar breaks in his right hamstring (September 2013 and April 2014) as well as another in the rectus of his left leg (October 2013), playing only 23 games.

Montoya (19 games) and Adriano (38 games) were responsible for filling in for the two first-choice full-backs, but the club's supposed best defence (Alves-Pique-Mascherano-Alba) could only play in 9 of the 38 league games.

It's not a minor detail, because the club picked up seven wins and one draw in those nine, with one loss (at home to Valencia).

GOOD TRANSFERS

The club have reinforced well, with Claudio Bravo, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic, Luis Suarez all being bought, while Rafinha, Gerard Deulofeu and Jordi Masip have all been promoted.

However, the defence has only been bolstered by Jeremy Mathieu, a convert from left-back, who many are questioning.

The Frenchman has much experience and should be a good signing for his quality and versatility, but with Puyol leaving and Mascherano being considered in midfield, they still lack one more.

MARQUINHOS AND CUADRADO

Taking into account Mathieu's profile and the money made from Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez, it's evident there's still money to sign a centre-back with a different profile to Pique and Bartra. Could it be Marquinhos? He seems to be the main objective but PSG need to be convinced to sell.

As for Juan Cuadrado, his profile is similar to Dani Alves. However, Fiorentina want €40m. This may be stumped up, or it may not, but in any case, it seems less urgent to worry about the right side than the centre-back spot.
