Eduardo Macia likely to replace Andoni Zubizarreta as Barca's sporting director

With the announcement of the termination of Andoni Zubizarreta's contract, a range of possible successors for the post of sporting director emerged and then was quickly reduced.

Carles Puyol left the club and Sevilla's Monchi rebuffed a third party offer.

SPORT have heard that Eduardo Macia, who started his career at Valencia, was an assistant to Benitez at Liverpool and had a brief stint in Greece, is the man who is the most likely candidate.

Macia is now the right hand of Fiorentina's sporting director and has been instrumental in ensuring big names arrive at the Italian club.

Bartomeu wants to put his foot on the gas and get a new sporting director as quickly as possible to turn the page after Zubizarreta's dismissal. Assistants Narcis Julia and Albert Valentin also seem set to depart with Zubi and Puyol.

The president hopes to put together a good technical set-up for the future. Contact has been made with Macia and things are going well, with a deal possible soon.
