Douglas was shocked to learn of Barcelona interest

Barcelona's latest signing, Douglas, has revealed he was surprised when he found out the Catalan club had approached Sao Paulo about signing him.

"It was a big shock to know that they were negotiating with Barcelona," he said through the Brazilian club's official website on Wednesday.

"For any player it is a dream [to play for Barça]."

Douglas is due in Spain on Friday to complete the transfer which will see the Blaugrana pay Sao Paulo €4million plus €1.5m more in variables.

And the 24-year-old insists he is ready for what will come in La Liga.

"I feel mature and ready for the challenge at Barça," he continued.

"I've grown up in Sao Paulo, mainly as a person. I've matured a lot and learned a lot, as well. The critics have also helped me and today I feel both mature and perpared."

But while he looks forward to new horizons, he also admitted he is sad to be leaving behind a club who will always be in his heart.

"It is with thanks to Sao Paulo that I can move to Barcelona.

"Of course I am sad to leave my friends behind here, but at the same time I am happy because this is a great opportunity.

"There are no words to show my appreciation for everything that has happened here.

"I was received with open arms, even though I was injured and I will always be rooting for Sao Paulo, regardless of where I am."
