Denis Suarez: I was surprised by Luis Enrique's comments after Sevilla game

The Barça midfielder spoke about a range of subjects on the radio on Monday night

Denis Suarez is with the Spain U21 squad as they try to qualify for next summer’s European Championships with a win in their playoff match against Austria. He joins them having impressed in Barcelona’s win against Sevilla. On Monday night he spoke to El Larguero on Cadena Ser. Here are his best phrases:

Taking advantage of starting: “Every time Luis Enrique puts me in from the beginning I try to give my all and take advantage of the opportunity. He has confidence in me and that’s good.”

Luis Enrique’s praise: “The manager’s comments surprised me, it’s a privilege that he says that about me. It shows the confidence he has in the work that I’m doing on a daily basis.”

Playing with Lionel Messi: “It’s incredible. Leo demonstrates every day that he’s the best. In training he does things that amaze you. His ambition surprised me. He always wants to win. If he’s losing [a training game] he gets the ball, goes past three and puts the ball in the goal and relaxes a little! I focused on him the first first days in the changing room, he’s very close and worries about everyone.”

His idol: “When I went to Balaidos I always focused on Gustavo Lopez when I was a kid. I have his shirt, he’s my idol and at home I have a photo with him at the airport in Vigo. I liked that he was a quick player and that he scored goals with a really strong shot.”

Changes at Barça: “It’s true that there have been changes but the midfield still carries its weight. Up front there are three beasts that resolve games and Messi does a little of everything. All the time more he’s more of a midfielder than an attacker!”

The MSN: “Usually they’re all together in the dressing room and go out on to the pitch together. That good atmosphere helps because there are no egos and no jealousy.

‘Godfather’ Xavi: “He was the first to tell me that I would come back when I went to Sevilla. Whenever I see him he’s delighted that I returned. I liked that I was able to get his shirt number… for me it’s amazing that he focuses on me as a player.”

Who would you sign from Madrid? “It’s difficult to improve our squad.”

Would you sign for Madrid? “No, never.”
