Cristiano Ronaldo remembers when Barcelona tried to sign him

The Portuguese star spoke to press in his homeland about the clubs who wanted him as a teen

Cristiano Ronaldo’s career, which looks set to end at Real Madrid, began back in Portugal with Sporting Club. Taking advantage of joining up with his national team this week, Ronaldo has spoken in his country about the first time Barcelona, among other clubs, became interested in him.

“When I’d played a few games with Sporting, I awoke the interest of various European clubs, such as Inter, Arsenal, Valencia and Barcelona,” the 31-year-old Madrid player assured.

But then came a game against Manchester United and after the then teenage Ronaldo has impressed, Sir Alex Ferguson made a big push to sign him, eventually taking him to Old Trafford.

Barcelona forgot about Ronaldo but it’s true that both have gone from strength to strength since then. Barça already had the best player in the world coming through La Masia at the time in the form of Lionel Messi and he’s helped them win a huge number of trophies.
