Calf injury rules Barça's Jeremy Mathieu out for three to four weeks

The French defender joins Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique on the sidelines as the list of absent defenders grows

Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu added his name to the club's injury list on Tuesday. Mathieu was a victim of the Catalan Super Cup final defeat against Espanyol in Tarragona.

Mathieu had to be taken off in the 54th minute, replaced by Martinez. The reason being he was injured. Barça confirmed as much after the game in a short statement saying that the centre-back "has a calf problem in his right leg."

In the statement they also advanced that he would undergo tests on Wednesday to determine the extent of the knock.

Barça have not yet released the results of the tests, which included a scan, but SPORT can reveal that the injury is more serious than was expected and he has torn his calf muscle.

That means he will be out for between three and four weeks. Another blow for Luis Enrique, who already has a number of defenders out injured.
