The Spain midifelder will remain at the team hotel before returning to Madrid

Sergio Busquets will not play for Spain against Switzerland on Sunday due to a bout of acute gastroenteritis, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed.

The Barcelona midfielder did not travel to Villarreal with the squad and remained at the team hotel in Castellon, accompanied by members of the medical team.

Busquets will return to Madrid with the rest of his teammates on Monday.

Despite missing the Switzerland game with a bug, Busquets is still expected to be in the starting lineup when Spain kick off their World Cup campaign against Portugal this month.

With Busquets missing -- and Isco also out -- the midfielder was made up of Koke, Andres Iniesta and Thiago.

Spain have one more friendly to come before the World Cup, against Tunisia on June 9.
