Messi scored 37 goals last season in La Liga, beating Dost and Aubameyang

Leo Messi received on Friday at 14.05 his fourth European Golden Shoe in an emotional gala at the Antiga Fàbrica Damm in Barcelona.

Messi won the 2016-17 Golden Shoe after scoring 37 goals (74 points) in La Liga last season. It's the fourth time he's won the award. This season he's scored 12 so far and if he wins it for a fifth time he will equal Di Stéfano, Quini and Hugo Sánchez. Zarra (6) would remain ahead of him.

REPLACES SUAREZ

Messi succeeds Luis Suarez, who won the prize in 2015-16 with 40 goals (80 points). Messi also equals Ronaldo in the ranking with four trophies. The Argentine won it in 2009-10 (34 goals), 2011-12 (50 goals) and 2012-13 (46 goals).

The Argentine was accompanied by wife Antonela and son Tiago as well as teammates Iniesta, Luis Suarez (who presented the award) and Busquets.

Also present was Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as other members of the board such as Jordi Mestre and Manel Arroyo.
