The Catalan club will increase the defender's buyout clause significantly

Talks are expected to officially begin at the beginning of 2018

Samuel Umtiti will have the treatment he deserves following his progression since he arrived at Barcelona in 2016. His spectacular form has quickly meant his current contract looks dates. At the moment he hardly earns more than three million euros per season, a lot less than the majority of his teammates. His 60 million euros release clause, meanwhile, is ridicuous and within reach of many clubs.

Therefore, Barça moved to change things in August. There was a meeting with Umtiti and his brother and agent Yannick about updating his terms to make them more in line with his performances. A few weeks ago, following rumours in the press, Barça reiterated their will to fulfill their word. It was Yannick who said there was no rush, that Samuel is happy and will be loyal. For now, there are no alarms.

Umtiti's contract currently expires in 2021. It will be extended by one or two years, but more importantly he will have a wage rise which will see his buyout clause go up to around 180 million euros. It's similar to the move the club made with Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Save any changes, talks will progress in the early stages of 2018. Umtiti's asked to be kept to the side of everything that's going on so he can focus on doing well in Ernesto Valverde's team.

NO TO THE PREMIER

Umtiti is a player who would be wanted by many clubs. At 23, 60 million euros would be a bargain. Premier League clubs certainly think so. However, Barça have been told first hand by Yannick that offers from England were knocked back in the summer. Yannick's made it clear that Umtiti's only desire is to remain at Camp Nou.

Now it's just a case of the Catalan club making a generous offer to the French international, keeping their word and tying down one of Europe's most talented defenders.
