Barcelona player ratings vs Valencia as Leo Messi saves the day

Marc-Andre ter Stegen 7

The goalkeeper had little chance with either of the two goals and made some good saves, notably from Dani Parejo who was through.

Sergi Roberto 6

A solid return after injury for the midfielder turned full-back, worked hard and Valencia did not manage to get in too many times down his flank.

Javier Mascherano 5

The Argentine should have been leading this defence in the absence of Gerard Pique, but was ineffectual at times as Valencia poured forward.

Samuel Umtiti 5

Perhaps lucky not to give away a penalty for a shove on Rodrigo. Had been mightily impressive so far and this was his first wobble, without Gerard Pique by his side.

Lucas Digne 6

The full-back suffered at times due to the direct running of Joao Cancelo and in the early stages of the second half Munir El Haddadi, but saved his side on two clear occasions by making late tackles as Valencia broke through.

Sergio Busquets 4

The midfielder was lucky not be shown the red card in the first half for two identical cynical tug backs. He was booked for the first but escaped red the second time of asking.

Andre Gomes 4

The Portuguese looked lost at times and much of the game passed him by, as he could not take control on his old hunting ground.

Andres Iniesta 7

Was playing with sparkle before a poor challenge from Enzo Perez meant he had to be taken off on a stretcher. Get well soon, Andres.

Lionel Messi 8

Scored the goals that opened the scoring and ended it. Still not at his best after injury but keeps coming up with the goods. His first goal a low drilled strike that surprised Alves, his second was a perfectly-placed penalty against a master stopper of spot-kicks.

Luis Suarez 6

Missed two huge chances in the first half but scored the goal that got his team level at 2-2. Worked extremely hard and won the late penalty that Messi converted.

Neymar 7

A mixed game but when he was good, he was very good. His stunning pass to Luis Suarez should have been converted by the Uruguayan.

Ivan Rakitic 7

The Croatian worked extremely hard to help Barcelona back into the game and struck the base of the post after Alves saved a Suarez strike.

Denis Suarez 5

Caught out by the intensity of the game and could not contribute much to it.
