Barcelona player ratings: Messi stars again in Atletico victory

The front three were all on form at the Vicente Calderon -- especially in the first half

In a game of two halves, Barcelona emerged 2-1 winners against Atletico Madrid thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

CILLESSEN (5) The Dutch goalkeeper couldn't do anything about the goal. However, he did make some unforgiveable errors, including one poor pass which nearly ended in a Kevin Gameiro equaliser.

SERGI ROBERTO (6) The converted midfielder lacked a little ambition going forward. But he was switched on to his defensive duties. Was able to deal with some difficult moments, although he's having a tough time recently.

PIQUE (7) The Catalan was the leader in defence. Was athletic and intelligent, although by the end he was forced to resort to more erratic ways of defending as the pressure piled on.

UMTITI (7) Good bringing the ball out from the back. Defensively, too, he did well and was able to cancel out several counter-attacks.

ALBA (7) One great tackle in the second half when Gabi was clean through with Cillseen. Didn't get forward as much as other games, aware of his work at the back.

MASCHERANO (8) Everywhere. Took on the role of defensive midfielder and did well. Spectacular in defence, winning the ball back in the build up to Suarez's goal. Even had a shot of his own in the second half.

RAKITIC (5) Still not at his finest. The Croatian makes sacrifices and works hard, but it's clear he's lost confidence. Was the first player taken off by Luis Enrique.

ANDRÉ GOMES (6) Playing alongside Rakitic, he took advantage of his physique in some of his better moments, but needlessly lost the ball at times.

MESSI (8) Scored a stunning goal, thumping home off the post from the edge of the area. Also ran the game from deeper, creating chances for his team-mates. Once again Barça's best player and only a combination of Moya and the woodowork prevented him scoring a free-kick.

SUÁREZ (8) Scored an incredible goal. An example of power, strength, speed, quality and execution. He's in good form, scoring 11 goals in his last 12 games. Was fouled in the build up to Atletico's goal.

NEYMAR (8) Did everything except one thing: score. Still having problems in that regard. Some how missed one chance after Messi had laid it on a playe for him at 2-1. Won't play the second leg after picking up a booking which leads to a suspension.

OFF THE BENCH:

DENIS SUÁREZ (6) Came on at a difficult time for Rakitic and took time to adapt to the game.

RAFINHA (7) Came on for Gomes in midfield and looked good on the ball, adding to the team's play.
