Barcelona defender Douglas Pereira set to join Sporting Gijon on loan

Barcelona have confirmed the loan move of outcast Douglas Pereira to Sporting Gijon for the season.

The deal, according to club executives, has just been finalised and the Catalan club will assume all the costs involved.

Sporting were the only team interested in signing the Brazilian after both Alaves and Leganes turned down the chance to sign the defender. Barça have reserved the right to a small amount of compensation if Douglas does not make a certain amount of appearances in the 2016/17 campaign.

Barça sporting director Robert Fernandez explained that it was a good deal for both the player and club.

"Our priority was that [Douglas] had game time and could value this on the pitch," he said. "He hasn't played for so long and a real assignment can only be completed if you are on the pitch.

"He's going to be protected by Gijon, but must earn a title with work. He's a player who can play at either right-back or right-wing in midfield.

"We wish him well and we are convinced that we were right [to make the deal happen]."

Douglas arrived at Barça from Sao Paulo in 2014 for 5.5 million euros and made just eight appearances for the Blaugrana.
