Barcelona to appeal Mascherano's red card

FC Barcelona will appeal Javier Mascherano's red card, which he was given for insulting the assistant referee during Sunday's win over Eibar.

Vice-president Jordi Mestre announced during a press conference on Monday that the Catalan club will stand by the Argentina international.

"We will appeal the sanction and defend the player because his intention was not to insult," Mestre said.

However, he didn't seem to optimistic given the recent four-game ban awared to Gerard Pique for a something he said to an official in the Super Cup game against Athletic Club.

"Seeing what we have recently, we don't have much hope, but we will appeal because we have a moral and legal obligation to do so," he added.

Mascherano was dismissed for saying "la concha de tu madre," although Luis Enrique said the player was saying it to himself out of frustration, rather than directing the term at the official.
