The Catalan club hope to sign the French defender this summer

Barcelona want to sign a centre-back this summer regardless of what happens with Samuel Umtiti's contract renewal. And the first option is Sevilla's Clement Lenglet.

Thomas Vermaelen's injury problems and the sensations left by Yerry Mina during his first months at the club have left the club wanting to move in the market again.

As of today, optimism grows that Umtiti will remain at Camp Nou after months of uncertainty. Meanwhile, they're accelerating contact with Lenglet's people and Sevilla.

Barça have been impressed by Lenglet's season, especially performances such as the one against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

The French defender has a release clause of 30 million euros, a decent price considering how the market has evolved.

His agent, Gregory Dakad, told Estadio Deportivo Barça aren't the only club interested in him: "There are clubs chasing Lenglet, but first of all he wants to finish the season well.

"He likes the club and the city of Seville. If he decides to leave, it will be a difficult decision for him. I can't say what clubs are interested, but there is interest in Spain and there have been questions from other countries, too."

Since learning of Barça's interest, Lenglet's transmitted doubts to his people. Gerard Pique and Umtiti are first choice and he's not sure about playing second fiddle.

But as the weeks have passed, he's felt more certain that he will be able to fight for an important role in the team. And he also values the fact he will be more likely to win silverware.

Barça have also asked Sevilla about negotiating the release clause. The response was a firm no, though. The price of Lenglet is 30 million euros.
