FC Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea (2-4 pens): Halilovic and Pique miss from the spot

A Jordi Masip error allowed Gary Cahill to net a late equaliser for Chelsea and sent the International Champions Cup to penalties, with Alen Halilovic and Gerard Pique fluffing their lines.

Halilovic went for a panenka but hit the crossbar, while Thibaut Courtois guessed where Pique was going and repelled his spot kick.

Luis Suarez's cheeky lob got the Blaugrana level after Eden Hazard's wonderful opener, before Sandro Ramirez looked like he had settled things with a stunning second-half strike.

Hazard's goal split the teams at half-time, with the Belgian receiving the ball from Kurt Zouma near the half-way line, zipping past Ivan Rakitic and Douglas, before holding off Marc Bartra and firing low into the bottom left corner.

It was a beautiful goal and gave some sort of vindication to Jose Mourinho's claim that Hazard is now the second best player on the planet, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and behind Lionel Messi. Hazard's dribbling drew comparisons to the movement of Messi, who Barcelona could have done with to put a few of their chances away in the first half.

They certainly had a few, with Suarez twice denied by excellent Courtois saves and Ivan Rakitic blazing wide from close range after a superb turn and ball in by the Uruguayan forward.

But Jose Mourinho's side were the stronger team in the first half and with a bit of luck or improved finishing of their own, they could have been further ahead.

Diego Costa powered his way past Bartra and Jeremy Mathieu but spurned a one-on-one, dragging his shot wide of the far post.

Oscar hit the bar from a free-kick with Ter Stegen left rooted to the spot, while the German keeper denied the Brazilian when he fired in a low shot from the right.

Ter Stegen had been called into action early on, when a perfect Cesc Fabregas delivery from a set piece fell perfectly to Kurt Zouma, with the goalkeeper expertly turning it over.

Both Bartra and Mathieu were struggling to keep track of Hazard and Costa, with the French defender going into the referee's notebook for one-too-many fouls.

But soon after the break, Suarez got the goal he was threatening to score.

After Cesar Azpilicueta's poor defensive header the striker delayed his finish, as defenders scrambled to block it, chipping home deftly past Courtois. Zouma tried to hack it off the line, but it seemed to have crossed and the goal was given.

The tide had turned and Barcelona were soon ahead, when Sandro Ramirez took his chance to impress Luis Enrique with both hands, curling one into the top right corner from the left side of the box.

The goal came soon after a raft of substitutions had taken place, which took some of the sting out of what had been a thoroughly entertaining game.

Substitute Ramires should have put Chelsea level but fired wide of Masip’s goal from close range with ten minutes to go, before the goalkeeper rushed out foolishly, allowing Cahill to nod home and force penalties.
