Barça's Pique: People rate me higher when I keep my mouth shut!

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, speaking from the Spain camp ahead of their World Cup qualifier with Italy, says that when he posts less on social media or gives less interviews in the press, he’s rated higher.

Pique was asked if he’s in the best moment of his career and he pointed out that “I’ve been at a good level for a number of years, it’s just when I’m quieter, it seems to enhance my performances.”

On the change from Vicente del Bosque to Julen Lopetegui as Spain coach, Pique didn’t want to compare the two, although he said that “maybe now we work on things we didn’t before with Vicente, but that era was unrepeatable and unique.”

He added: “Now we are beginning a new era with a new manager. We started well with a win in Belgium and now we want to take a step forward and strengthen the new manager’s ideas.”

On Italy, he offered: “They have their own way of playing. They have always been categorised as defensive, but Italian football’s enjoying a rich moment for goal scorers, with teams like Juventus and Napoli generating play and scoring a lot of goals.”
