Barça will play Sampdoria in Joan Gamper trophy on August 10

Barça's Joan Gamper trophy opponents this year will be Sampdoria on Wednesday, August 10.

The choice hadn't been easy, with the Blaugrana initially wanting to play Ajax to commemorate the passing of Johan Cruyff on March 24.

Both clubs tried to find a suitable date for the contest in August. The Catalan club's involvement in the Supercopa de Espana and Ajax's in the Champions League qualifying round proved to be stumbling blocks.

During last week, Barça explored other options and finally Sampdoria were chosen as the opponents. The two teams famously contested the 1992 European Cup final at Wembley, ultimately proving to be the Blaugrana's first European Cup triumph won by Cruyff's 'Dream Team'.

This year will see the 51st edition of the Joan Gamper trophy, which serves as a presentation of the team ahead of each new season.
