Barça star Neymar close to securing a Spanish passport

FC Barcelona will receive some good news in the coming weeks which could allow them to touch up their squad in the month of January. Neymar will obtain a Spanish passport before the end of the year, freeing up a space for a foreign signing in Barça's squad.

The Brazilian is still in the process of obtaining Spanish nationality amd, with the help of the club, he is one step away from being awarded it. Predictions suggest Neymar will be given his new passport in November or December.

An agreement between the Spanish and Brazilian governments stipulates that a person who spends two and a half years resiging in Spain can request double nationality. Neymar was signed by Barcelona in May of 2013, so he has now spent 30 months in Spain.

It's benficial for the player, but even more so for the club. The first team's three non-EU spots are currently taken up by Neymar, Douglas and Luis Suarez, so a spot will become free.

That means that in January, when FIFA's transfer ban ends, Barça could sign another non-EU player. The sporting director, Robert Fernandez, will not have any limits and will be able to look at players from any part of the world.
