Barcelona released a statement on Saturday ahead of their league match against Villarreal confirming their support for a referendum on Catalonia’s political future.
However, the club did not offer their position on independence in the region, merely stating that they back the campaign for a referendum to be held.
A statement read: “FC Barcelona informs that they have joined the National Referendum, a campaign to gather the support of institutions, entities, elected congressman and individuals from inside and outside Catalonia for the holding of a referendum on the political future of the region.”
