Andres Iniesta will be out of action for two weeks with knee issue

FC Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will be out for two weeks.

The statement released by the club on Monday morning, after submitting the captain to further medical tests, confirmed that the player suffers a "posterior capsule distention of the right knee", and that his approximate time away from the team will be two weeks.

The player from Albacete is thereby ruled out of the return leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla, as well as the first league match of the season, on August 20, against Betis.

The evolution of his recovery will determine is he is fit in time for the second matchday of La Liga, at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao, on August 28, a date that would seem a little too soon for the midfielder given the medical bulletin.

The tests did rule out the fear that the lateral internal knee ligament had been affected, which is good news for Barça fans and the player.

During the first-half of the game against Sevilla on Sunday night, the footballer felt pain and asked to be substituted immediately.

Iniesta left the pitch by foot, and TV cameras showed him on the bench, applying ice to the affected area of his right knee.

During the interval, he underwent some preliminary tests to rule out a serious injury.

It was not until Monday that the full details of the problem was able to be diagnosed.
