Pique's ban and Mascherano's injury means there will be an improvised defence
Vermaelen's the obvious choice, but Digne, Busquets or a B teamer may be prefererred
With Mascherano injured and Pique suspended, Valverde has a problem next Sunday when Barcelona play against Valencia at Mestalla. Who will partner Umtiti in defence?
On paper, there's no problem. There is a fourth centre-back, called Thomas Vermaelen, and he should play. But the Barça coach has not shown how much faith he has in him. Whether it's to do with his injury history or his ability, what's certain is that the Belgian has not played.
As we say, on paper, he should partner Umtiti. But it's not ruled out that Lucas Digne finally take that role. Even though he's a left-back, he has played there before and Valverde backs Digne more than Vermaelen. That's clear.
Less likely is that the Barça coach dips into the B team. At least not for a starting spot. Both David Costas and Jorge Cuenca could have a chance, but it's more likely they will be on the bench. One of them, anyway.
But it's not all bad news. Last season, Barcelona also went to Mestalla without Pique. The defender was injured and could not play. Nor could Jordi Alba. Umtiti and Mascherano played, flanked by Sergi Roberto and Digne. And Barça won 2-3, thanks to a stoppage time Messi penalty.
